An Evening of Captivating Fusion and Classical Delight

  • by

Date: 24th April 2000, By: By Navtej Johar & Rekha Surya

This was the tenth performance in the series of the cultural extravaganza held under the auspices of LSS on 24th April, 2000 at the Nehru Sidhant Kender.

The opening performance was by Rekha Surya, a light-classical Hindustani vocalist and disciple of late Begum Akhtar. She very effortlessly let the audience transcend into the world of ghazals. Following this was the performance of Navtej Johar, a dancer of extra ordinary abilities and nick named by Khuswant Singh as the “Dancing Sardar.” He presented two exquisitely choreographed pieces. The first was Bhartnatyam set in Raag Purvi Kalyan and the second was a unique experimentation with the dance form in which Navtej juxtaposed a gospel with a piece of Karnatik music. For the audience it was truly a taste of pristine tradition in music and an innovative experimentation with traditional dance form.

The presentation was widely appreciated and reported in the media.

The venue was provided free of charge by Nehru Sidhant Kender Trust and light and sound was courtesy, Cyclone Acoustics.
