There is a saying in Sanskrit, “Matru Devo Bhava”, that is, “Mother is God.” But how often does the mother in the family actually sit on this pedestal; how often is she actually treated with mundane indifference; how often is she made to retire into the background.
Like most families, the protagonist family in the play is passing through a phase of emotional turmoil. The sons of the family are convinced that their worlds lie beyond the confines of their home, the man of the house believes that he is responsible only for the material management of the home and to add to the complications within the household their is the daughter who has eloped and left the family to shame … and amidst all this chaos there remains the mother, in the background – in her balancing act …
