“Dance like a Man” – an English Play, written by Mahesh Dattani and directed by Lillete Dubey, was staged in Ludhiana, under the patronage of LSS. It is a powerful human drama that looks at the contemporary Indian social scenario with humour, drama and insight.

The drama reveals the darker secrets of familiar relationships and conflicts between generations, through the story of Jairaj and Ratna, who are Bharatnatyam dancers, past their prime and their daughter, Lata, a brilliant dancer on the thresholds of her dancing career. The play probes into the deeper surface of the characters to question their inherent motivations. Although the treatment is comic, the theme subtly unveils more serious, real and universal concerns.

The beautifully crafted play sways effortlessly between the past and the present, with the stage players giving a seamless performance. The production has completed over 170 shows in India and abroad and has received acclaim from audiences and critics alike. O S Arun, a renowned Carnatic Vocalist, rendered the original music score for the play. Leading Bharatnatyam dancer – Geeta Chandran, did the choreography. The main stage players, who have received world wide media acclaim for their transforming acting, were: Vijay Chrishna, Joy Sengupta, Suchitra Pillai and Lillete Dubey.

Undoubtedly, a once in a life time show. The play was sponsored by Citibank.
